Why concrete struggles in Southwest Florida
Our sandy soil moves, our summers are brutally hot, and our rain comes in heavy bursts. Concrete is a rigid slab — when the ground shifts underneath it or it expands and contracts in the heat, it cracks. Once it cracks, water gets under it and the problem grows. A patch never matches, so many homeowners end up replacing the whole slab within 15 years.
Why pavers hold up
Pavers are individual units set on a compacted base with sand joints. That design lets the surface flex with the ground instead of cracking. If a section ever settles — say from a tree root or a washout — we lift those pavers, fix the base and reset them. No patch, no scar. Sealed pavers also resist the UV fading, chlorine and salt air that age other surfaces here. See our full breakdown of paver driveway costs to compare the long-term math.
Around the pool, it's not close
For pool decks, pavers win clearly: they stay cooler underfoot, grip better when wet, and handle chlorine and salt. That's why most new SWFL pool decks are done in pavers or travertine, not concrete. Learn more about pool deck pavers in your area.
When concrete still makes sense
If you need the absolute lowest upfront cost and the surface isn't a focal point (a hidden side slab, for example), concrete can be fine. For anything visible — a driveway, patio or pool deck — pavers are the better long-term investment in Florida.
